What is a share?

A share is an ownership interest in a private limited company such as DNB, Equinor or Tesla. When you buy a share, you become a co-owner and gain the right to your proportion of the value the company creates.

Which shares should you buy?

What you should buy depends on your finances and the risk you are willing to take. Familiarise yourself with the companies you are interested in, and look at their future prospects. As a customer, you gain access to daily and weekly share tips from our award-winning analysts.

How to trade shares, click by click

  • Step 2 - Find the share you want to buy by clicking "search" at the top right of the page. Enter the company name, or the ticker if you know it (a ticker is an abbreviation of the company name, e.g. EQNR for Equinor).

  • Step 3 - Click "Buy" – the blue button to the right of the share name. This will display an overview of your own trading accounts. Select a trading account and fill in the purchase form.

  • Step 4 - Enter the number of shares you want to buy and the maximum price you are willing to pay (the number is sometimes called "volume" and the maximum price is often called "limit").

  • Step 5 - Enter how long the order (your bid for the shares) should be valid by clicking on the date below the total amount, maximum 30 days.*

  • Step 6 -Click "Next". You will receive a summary of the order and be asked to confirm the purchase once more before it is sent to the exchange. If the exchange is open and someone in the market is willing to sell you the quantity you want at that price, the purchase takes place immediately.

  • Step 7 -As soon as the purchase is completed, you will receive a receipt. The shares will appear in "Portfolio" under "My profile."

*30-day validity on orders applies only to the Nordic exchanges: the Oslo Stock Exchange, Helsinki Stock Exchange, Stockholm Stock Exchange and Copenhagen Stock Exchange. For the other exchanges, only day orders apply.

Low price on share trading for those under 28

We want young people to buy shares. In DNB's share trading, young people between 18 and 28 can trade shares for just NOK 1 or 0.05 per cent in brokerage. That way, the brokerage fee, or the price of the transaction, will not eat too much into any potential gain.

You always get the lowest possible price

Prospera has named us the best brokerage house in Norway for ten years running, largely thanks to Smart Order Routing (SOR).

With our Smart Order Routing, share prices and availability are checked across a range of marketplaces in a fraction of a second. Rather like an ultra-fast price comparison algorithm. Your buy order is then filled at the lowest possible price. When you sell, it's the opposite – SOR secures the highest price. The brokerage fee you pay can quickly be recouped.
